Prevention Week is coming up October 7 to October 13. During
this week it is a good idea to go over your evacuation plan
with your family. It is extremely important that your whole
family knows the evacuation plan and rallying point once
everyone is outside. If you need any help with your
evacutation plans please feel free to contact us at the
station and we will be more than happy to assist you in
creating an evacuation plan. Another things that is
important to do this time of year is change the batteries in
your smoke detectors. Its easy to remember to change the
batteries the same time that you change your clocks. Always
remember to test your smoke detectors once you put the new
battery in to make sure they are working properly. Everyone
Surf City Loses
with deep regret that we inform you of Lt. John Moore
passing away. Lt. Moore was laid to rest yesterday. He was a
devoted firefighter and served over 20 years in the
community. It is never easy to lose someone but its even
harder to lose someone like "Fatback". Lt. Moore is in a
better place and he is watching over all of us. Please keep
Lt. Moore, his family, and his friends all in your prayers.
Lt. Moore will always be remembered! We love you and
will miss you!
Juniors Bring Home Hardware
City Juniors took a trip to Miller's Ferry Fire Department
in Salisbury, North Carolina to compete in the JR
firefighter muster. 5 juniors went to the muster and
competed in 6 different events, tug-o-war, bucket brigade,
turnout gear relay, water ball, junior firefighter
competition and the new hose drill. Surf City had a warm
welcome to the event and all the participants worked hard
and had fun. Surf City Juniors brought home a Participation
Award, the Longest Distance Award, and a Water Ball Second
Place Award. We are all very proud of the Juniors and their
accomplishments. Keep up the good work!
Surf City Volunteer would like

Surf City Receives Grant
From Firehouse Subs
November 11, 2011
Surf City Volunteer Fire Department
was awarded a Firehouse Subs Grant. With this grant SCVFD
was able to recieve a portable pump, combi tool and
hydraulic hose which Firehouse Subs purchased. This will
enable us to extricate victims from their vehicles. In
getting this grant and these tools the community is now a
safer place and the citizens are now more protected. We
would like to thank Firehouse Subs!
"Give that the county as
a whole was going to a different type of radio system
helped us out quite a bit," he said.
Batts recommended that
rural departments use the federal grants to procure
equipment. "It is very hard to for volunteer departments
to purchase such equipment in order to provide coverage to
taxpayers," he said. "So I would advise small department
to try grants because the money is out there."
- A Sincere Thank You!
We here at the Surf City
Volunteer Fire Department would like to offer a sincere
and heartfelt THANK YOU to the members of
our community, and the County Commissioners of Pender
County for their continued support. Without all of you, we
would not be able to serve with pride, as we have for
over 40 years, and hope to do so much longer into the
- An extension of the
services we provide
Our part-time personnel
program enters its sixth year. The program has been
extended to include 2 personnel during the daytime hours
throughout the week. We have also added additional
staffing for the Summer/Brush Fire season.
In the fall of 2006, the
Surf City Volunteer Fire Department began providing its
citizens and taxpayers with daytime personnel to man our
station. There is a firefighter on duty at the station
from 6:30 am to 6:30 pm Monday through Friday. This firefighter
is on hand to answer emergency calls, as well as handle
any other tasks during the day. This includes repairing
equipment, washing trucks, performing daily status checks,
and many other administrative duties. We invite the public
to stop by our station during the day and say hello. We
would be glad to meet you.
