On
September 5, 1966 papers were completed and signed that began
the traditions of service and caring for residents of Topsail
Island, NC. That paper was the "Articles of
Incorporation". The documents were filed by the Secretary
of State for North Carolina on September 15, 1966 at 4:13 pm.
On
this day, the Topsail Island Volunteer Fire Department, Inc was
formed. The original Incorporators were Lloyd Rochelle, M. J.
Blizzard and John Frazier, all of Surf City.
The
signatures of these three gentlemen were the beginning of a
service and dedication to the surrounding community. Along with
4 other gentlemen, Joseph Paliotti, J. T. Bostic, Frank Ross,
and E. R. Rackley, the original Board of Directors was formed.
This was the beginning of what you see inside our department to
this very day: Service, Honor, Caring, Gratitude, and Tradition.
From
September 1966 until May of 1974, the department continued to
provide services under the name Topsail Island Volunteer Fire
Department, Inc. In May 1974, papers were completed and signed
that amended the "Articles of Incorporation". On June
28 1974, the documents were filed by the Secretary of State for
North Carolina, officially changing the name to Surf City
Volunteer Fire Department, Inc.
From
May 1974 until the fall of 1992, we continued to serve our
community with our fine traditions and standards out of a small
cement block building at the intersection of Roland Avenue and
North Topsail Drive within the corporate limits of the Town of
Surf City, NC. This building dated back to the 1940s, when the
military occupied Topsail Island as part of its defense
operations.
In
the fall of 1992, construction was completed on our newer
sub-station located on NC Highway 210 East, at the entrance to
the Deer Run subdivision. This station was built to enhance our
service and response to the community. This allowed us to have
trucks and equipment on both the island and the mainland
simultaneously.
From the fall of
1992 for approximately 1 year, the town of Surf City chose to
charter their own fire department and cease the contract with
our department for fire protections. Their new department was named the Treasure
Coast Fire Department. After a brief period of time, their
operations ceased and the Surf City Volunteer Fire Department
returned as the primary provider for fire protection and
prevention services for
the Northeast Pender Fire District in the county and the Town of
Surf City.
From
the beginning of our commitment, dedication and service until
July 1 1999, we continued to serve the citizens of both the
Northeast Pender Fire District and the Town of Surf City
proudly. Effective July 1, 1999, the Town of Surf City
officially began operation and service of their own municipal
fire department. The Town of Surf City Commissioners chose not renew the
existing service contract for fire protection and prevention
services with the Surf City
Volunteer Fire Department, Inc.
Today,
with over 40 years of continued dedication, traditions, professionalism and
community service, we remain in service, proudly providing fire
protection and prevention services and assistance to the citizens, property
owners, businesses and visitors of the Northeast Pender Fire District.
